

Scientist – Development of fishing gear technology – two-year position
The Marine and Freshwater Research Institute in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland is seeking a research scientist for a two-year temporary position to work on research focused on the development of fishing gear technologies.
This position is part of the Marine Guardian project, funded by the EU Horizon Programme, supporting innovation for a thriving blue economy.
As a Research Scientist, you will play a key role in the development of gear technologies aimed at reducing bycatch, minimizing seabed impacts, and lowering carbon emissions. Your work will directly support the transition toward more sustainable and efficient fishing practices in collaboration with both scientific and industry stakeholders.
- Conduct comprehensive literature reviews on fishing gear technologies
- Coordinate research activities and data collection across a diverse group of scientists.
- Organize and facilitate project meetings and stakeholder workshops.
- Collaborate closely with fishing industry partners on fishing gear development and innovation.
- Write and coordinate project reports.
- Receive training in social science methods and research ethics to support co-production of knowledge with industry stakeholders.
- Participate in annual project meetings, training events, conferences, and sea trials of fishing gear (travel required).
We are looking for a candidate with a strong interest in applied marine science, fishing technology, or environmental research. Ideal qualifications include:
- Master's degree or equivalent education in biology, engineering, or resource management.
- At least three years of experience working directly with or within a marine fishing sector, preferably related to fishing gear or development of fishing technology.
- Willingness to travel and participate in fieldwork at sea.
- Experience working at sea is a significant advantage
- Experience in practical work with fishing gear technology is desirable
- It is desirable for the applicant to have experience/skills in data analysis, data processing, or computer science
- Ambition, initiative, and independence in work methods.
- Good organizational and communication skills.
- Experience in report writing is an advantage
- Positive attitude, willingness to collaborate, and ability to work in a team.
- Good general computer skills.
- Good ability to express oneself verbally and in writing in Icelandic and English.
