
Mechanical Designer
Borealis Data Center is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented and hands-on. Mechanical Designer to support the development of its data center infrastructure.
The Mechanical Designer will be responsible for developing mechanical designs for new data center projects, expansions, and upgrades. The role focuses particularly on cooling, ventilation, piping, HVAC, and other critical mechanical systems required to maintain reliable, efficient, and resilient data center operations.
Working closely with project managers, engineers, external consultants, contractors, and equipment suppliers, the Mechanical Designer will translate technical requirements into coordinated and constructible design solutions. The successful candidate will bring relevant data center design experience, strong technical capabilities, and a structured approach to multidisciplinary design coordination.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop mechanical designs for new data centers, expansions, and infrastructure upgrades
- Design cooling, ventilation, piping, and associated mechanical systems
- Prepare drawings, schematics, specifications, calculations, and other technical documentation
- Support equipment selection and ensure designs meet requirements for capacity, reliability, maintainability, and energy efficiency
- Coordinate mechanical designs with electrical, structural, architectural, civil, and controls disciplines
- Participate in design reviews and resolve design conflicts, spatial constraints, and technical interface issues
- Collaborate with internal teams, consultants, contractors, and suppliers throughout the project lifecycle
- Provide technical support during procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and site inspections
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree or technical qualification in mechanical engineering, mechanical design, building services engineering, or a related field
- Relevant experience designing mechanical and cooling systems for data centers or comparable mission-critical infrastructure
- Experience using BIM and CAD tools such as Revit, AutoCAD, or Navisworks
- Knowledge of relevant building codes, technical standards, and requirements for reliability, redundancy, maintainability, and energy efficiency
- Experience coordinating mechanical designs across multiple disciplines and project stakeholders
- Structured and detail-oriented, with strong technical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Hands-on experience applying mechanical designs in construction or operational environments
- Strong communication skills in English; Icelandic is an advantage
