Who we are

Skývafnir is a two-person Icelandic cloud consultancy. We design, build and run Azure and Kubernetes infrastructure for Icelandic public sector bodies and private companies.

We run on a few principles. The people who build the system are the people the client talks to. We say what we will do, and then we do it.

We leave behind infrastructure a client can understand and operate, documented well enough that they are never locked in to us.

We are hiring one or two more engineers because we have more work than the two of us can do well.

The role

You do what the two of us already do: design systems, build them in code, run them in production, and talk to the client about it yourself. In one week you might write Terraform, debug a cluster upgrade, sit in an architecture review, and fix something that broke at an awkward hour.

There is no separate ops team to hand things to, and no architect who draws diagrams somebody else implements. You own what you build. The work itself:

• Designing and setting up systems in Azure and AWS, and sometimes on other platforms too
• Azure landing zones, networking and identity, built and maintained in Terraform
• Kubernetes in production, both AKS and on-premises clusters
• GitOps delivery pipelines in GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps
• Monitoring and alerting that people actually trust, including on-call rotation
• Security and compliance work, including our own ISO 27001 effort and the controls our public sector clients require

What we are looking for

The list above is what we work on, not a checklist you have to tick. If some of it is unfamiliar and you want to learn it, that is fine. We learned most of it on the job too.

We are open on seniority. What we need is someone who can take a problem apart, learn quickly, and be trusted with production.

What we do care about:

• You have run something real in production and lived with the consequences
• You like talking about technology, with us and with clients
• You want our clients to get the best service you can give them, not the fastest possible ticket close
• You can sit with a client, work out what they actually need, and explain a tradeoff without hiding behind jargon

English is what you need day to day. Icelandic helps, but it is not a requirement.

Nice to have

CKA, CKAD, CKS or Azure certifications, Vault and secrets management, bare metal Kubernetes, ISO 27001 or other compliance work, and experience with Icelandic public sector clients are all a plus. None of them are required.

What we offer

A permanent full-time position. Salary is set by experience and we negotiate it openly, with no games about ranges.

We strongly encourage working towards the certifications that fit what you do, and you get time and budget for it. We are working through them ourselves.

You also get real ownership of systems and a direct line to the people who decide things, since there are only two of us.

We get to conferences regularly, Microsoft Ignite among them, and the company pays for it. Staying current is part of the job here, not something you do on your own weekends.

The office

We've got a small office inside Vinnustofa Kjarval, downtown Reykjavík.

The room is ours alone, so we can close the door and talk freely about client systems. The rest of the house is there when you want company.

We eat lunch together most days, usually at Jómfrúin, Messinn, or one of the other good places nearby, rather than a sandwich over a keyboard.

We are in the office most days, because two people at the same table solve a problem faster than two people in a thread. We are not rigid about it.
