Senior Network Engineer – Datacenter & Cloud Networking
1984 Hosting is looking for an experienced Senior Network Engineer to help design, build and operate the network infrastructure behind our existing hosting services and our new Icelandic public cloud.
This is a senior hands-on engineering role covering datacenter networking, Internet routing, Linux networking and cloud network architecture.
Our infrastructure supports shared hosting, email hosting, VPS services, distributed storage and a growing public-cloud platform across multiple datacenter environments.
We are looking for someone with a strong understanding of networking at protocol level who is comfortable diagnosing complex problems across routers, switches, Linux hosts, virtualisation platforms and distributed systems.
The role includes both operation of existing production infrastructure and the implementation of new network architecture for our public cloud. You will work closely with our Linux, storage and software engineers and have substantial influence over how the network evolves.
Deep understanding of networking concepts and protocols is more important to us than experience with any particular vendor.
-
Design, build and operate datacenter network infrastructure.
-
Develop the network architecture for 1984's new public cloud.
-
Design and operate EVPN / VXLAN environments.
-
Operate BGP and Internet connectivity.
-
Develop routing policies and network resiliency.
-
Integrate Linux hosts and virtualisation platforms with the physical network.
-
Build and operate high-speed networks for compute and distributed storage.
-
Diagnose and resolve complex network incidents.
-
Analyse network traffic and performance.
-
Test convergence and failure scenarios.
-
Improve redundancy and high availability.
-
Automate network configuration and deployment.
-
Build and improve network monitoring and alerting.
-
Work with transit providers, datacenters and equipment vendors.
-
Participate in capacity planning.
-
Contribute to DDoS protection and mitigation architecture.
-
Work closely with Linux, storage and software engineers.
-
Document network architecture, configurations and operational procedures.
We are primarily looking for substantial hands-on experience designing and operating production networks.
Strong knowledge and practical experience with:
-
BGP.
-
IPv4 and IPv6.
-
Ethernet switching.
-
VLANs.
-
Routing and routing policy.
-
Linux networking.
-
Datacenter network architecture.
-
Network troubleshooting and packet analysis.
-
Redundancy and high availability.
-
Network monitoring and observability.
For our cloud environment, experience with the following is particularly valuable:
-
EVPN / VXLAN.
-
FRRouting / FRR.
-
Zebra.
-
BGP unnumbered.
-
VRFs.
-
Overlay and underlay network design.
-
Leaf-spine architectures.
-
ECMP.
-
Anycast.
-
Linux bridges and network namespaces.
Experience with some of the following is highly desirable:
-
Juniper / Junos.
-
NVIDIA / Mellanox Ethernet switching.
-
Lenovo datacenter switches.
-
High-speed Ethernet, including 100/200 GbE.
-
MLAG.
-
LACP.
-
BFD.
-
QoS.
-
DDoS mitigation.
-
Internet transit and peering.
-
RIPE and IP resource management.
-
DNS.
-

-
Network automation.
-
Ansible.
-
Python.
-
Shell scripting.
-
Netlink and eBPF.
We do not expect candidates to have worked with every vendor or technology listed above.
A candidate with strong experience operating large-scale Cisco, Arista or other vendor environments may be a very good fit even without direct experience with all of the equipment we currently use.
What matters most is a deep understanding of networking, strong troubleshooting ability and experience operating production infrastructure.
Formal education and certifications such as JNCIP, JNCIE, CCNP or CCIE are useful, but they are not requirements. Practical experience and technical depth matter more.
-
Contribution towards fitness and exercise expenses.
-
Contribution towards lunch costs.
-
Flexible remote-working policy.
-
The opportunity to help build a new Icelandic public cloud from the ground up.
-
Significant technical independence and real influence over network architecture.
-
Work with large and technically demanding production infrastructure.
-
Direct involvement with physical networking, Linux, virtualisation and distributed storage.
-
A role where technical depth and sound engineering matter more than buzzwords.
-
A flexible and informal working environment.
-
The opportunity to work with an experienced infrastructure team.
Our environment includes technologies such as:
-
FRRouting / FRR.
-
Zebra.
-
BGP.
-
EVPN / VXLAN.
-
IPv4 and IPv6.
-
Juniper / Junos.
