Material Sciences Specialist

As part of the R&D Centre for New Technologies, the Material Sciences Specialist collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of product designers, research engineers and manufacturing / process engineers to explore, develop, and qualify material, compounds and processes to support the company’s vision and strategy. The Centre for New Technologies is an arm of Össur global R&D department which is responsible for the exploration and maturation of technological opportunities related to materials, products, and manufacturing processes in the orthotic and prosthetic business field.

Specifically, the Material Sciences Specialist acts as internal subject matter expert supporting product designers, research engineers and process engineers in selecting, specifying and qualifying engineering materials, as well as their processing into products.

  • Supports internal engineering activities as SME in material sciences, with specific focus on polymeric materials. 

  • Leads interactions with materials and compounds provider to optimize formulation for specifications and process integration. 

  • Supports product designers in selection and specification of engineering materials. 

  • Supports manufacturing engineering for materials / compounds / process optimization. 

  • Leads interactions between product designers / research engineers and compounds suppliers to identify and specify material engineering properties. 

  • Contributes to company engineering materials portfolio management. 

  • Contributes to product/materials portfolio regulatory strategy and continued compliance. 

  • Defines and specifies compounds / materials testing requirements and their implementation in daily operations.  

  • Contributes to risk management activities at product / process / business levels. 

  • Stays up to date with the latest industry trends and technologies, communicates novel opportunities and/or solutions to internal stakeholders.  

  • Provides technical guidance, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement. 

  • Good skills in independent work. 

Menntunar- og hæfniskröfur
  • BSc. or MSc. in Engineering or Science, with preference towards Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Sciences, or related field. 

  • Minimum 5 years of industry experience - preferably in polymeric materials, silicone compounds, engineering materials, or their processing. Medical devices or other regulated industries experience is a plus. 

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in translating and implementing innovative product concepts into efficient production processes. 

  • Demonstrated project leadership abilities on highly technical and complex projects. 

  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills. 

  • Ability to work in a team environment with colleagues with different technical expertise, as well as perform tasks independently. 

  • Willingness to learn new skills and demonstrate innovative approaches to problem solving. 

  • Skills to work in a highly regulated product development environment. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
