

Head of Laboratory
The Head of the Oculis Laboratory will be a transformational leader responsible for establishing a high-performing pharmaceutical development laboratory. Reporting to the CTO, this role combines strategic vision with hands-on leadership to drive innovation, scientific excellence, and operational efficiency in the early stages of technical development.
The successful candidate will lead the implementation of cutting-edge technologies, establish robust internal procedures and scientific governance, and cultivate a strong team culture that promotes ambition, scientific curiosity, and accountability. Leadership & Strategic Direction
- Develop and drive the strategic roadmap for the formulation and analytical laboratory, aligning with the company’s goals, providing input to executive management
- Identify, evaluate, and implement emerging technologies and innovative tools to enhance laboratory capabilities and data quality.
- Serve as a change agent, fostering a culture of scientific rigor, continuous improvement, and innovation.
- Focused on the long-term success and strategy of aligned functions
- Accountable for results which impact positively the entire Laboratory function and beyond
Infrastructure & Scientific Governance
- Establish and maintain internal systems, SOPs, technical guidelines, and best practices to ensure consistent, high-quality scientific output across the team.
- Define and enforce scientific standards and review practices to ensure robust and reproducible results.
- Lead the development of internal documentation templates, training programs, and workflows to support compliance, knowledge sharing, and team development.
Team Leadership & Motivation
- Inspire, lead, and develop a multidisciplinary team of scientists across formulation and analytical functions.
- Set clear performance goals, provide regular feedback, and actively foster professional growth and cross-training within the team.
- Create an ambitious and supportive team culture that encourages proactive problem-solving, ownership, and scientific excellence.
- Responsible for resource planning.
Technical Oversight
- Oversee the design and development of robust drug formulations for various dosage forms and their progression through preclinical and clinical development.
- Lead analytical method development and transfer activities, ensuring compliance with ICH, USP/EP/JP, and global regulatory standards.
- Ensure timely, high-quality data to support regulatory submissions (IND, IMPD, NDA, BLA, etc.).
Operational Excellence
- Champion laboratory modernization, including evaluation and integration of automation, digital tools, and data management platforms.
- Manage external partners and internal resources to ensure scientific and operational goals are met efficiently.
- Ensure compliance with GMP, GLP, and other regulatory standards across all laboratory operations.
Qualifications
- Education:
Ph.D. or M.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline. - Experience:
- 10+ years of experience (including leadership) in pharmaceutical product development across formulation and analytical functions.
- Proven track record of implementing new technologies and building scientific infrastructure in a regulated laboratory environment.
- Extensive experience in method development/validation, and formulation development for small molecules and/or biologics.
