Animal Care Manager (Curator)

Lead the Future of Beluga Whale Conservation

At the SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary, you'll lead an experienced team dedicated to providing world-class care for Little Grey and Little White, our resident belugas, while also overseeing the welfare of rescued puffins and our aquarium collection.

More than an animal care management role, this is an opportunity to combine exceptional leadership, animal welfare expertise and conservation passion at the world's first open-water beluga whale sanctuary.

As our Animal Care Manager (Curator), you'll lead all aspects of animal care, welfare and husbandry across the sanctuary.

Working closely with the General Manager and the wider SEA LIFE TRUST and Merlin Entertainments teams, you'll ensure our animals receive exceptional care while supporting scientific research, conservation, education and unforgettable guest experiences.

You'll lead, coach and develop a passionate team of animal care professionals whilst ensuring the highest standards of welfare, safety and operational excellence.

Main tasks and responsibilities

To deliver consistently high standards of beluga training and welfare, including operant conditioning, animal husbandry and life support systems operation.

Oversee the welfare and development of animal care areas within the sanctuary, including resident puffins, rescued pufflings and aquarium collection.

To train and develop the animal care team to have consistently high standards of animal care.

To support and advise the sanctuary stakeholders including CWE, Merlin and other partners on specialist area of cetacean care.

To ensure consistently high standards of cleanliness and professionalism throughout all areas.

To educate the public on key areas relating to the Belugas, their habitat and other sanctuary residents in our care.

Educational and skill requirements

At least 10 years of experience in a leadership role within a cetacean, aquarium or zoological field.

Proven leadership managing a team including activity direction and development.

A well-developed understanding of animal training and with operant conditioning, animal health, husbandry and behaviour to ensure each animal the best individual care. 

Strong swimmer and must be able to pass department swim test, which includes, but not limited to minimum requirements for treading water, breath holding, free diving and endurance.

Knowledge of the habits and hazards of working with large marine mammals.

Ability to work on a boat and in open water.

Must have a clean full criminal record check.
