Technical Artist (Mid-level/Senior), Unreal Engine 5
About the role
In this role, you will make the vehicles and equipment in our simulator behave and feel right. You will rig aircraft and ground support equipment, set up the physics behind towed and articulated systems, and build the animation systems and effects that bring airport environments to life. This is a hands-on Unreal Engine 5 role working closely with artists, animators, engineers and aviation subject-matter experts.
We are open to hiring at either mid-level or senior level. Level will be determined by the scope and depth of relevant experience, independence in solving technical problems, and ability to shape workflows and guide others. At senior level, we will expect you to take greater ownership of technical-art standards, workflows and decisions across the platform. This is a full-time role based in Reykjavík.
How to apply
Apply through alfred.is, for more info contact [email protected].
There is no need to submit a traditional cover letter. Instead, tell us about a project where you made a real difference:
-
What was the challenge?
-
What did you do?
-
What was the outcome?
-
What did you learn?
We welcome applicants with different backgrounds and career paths. We assess applications against the skills and responsibilities of the role and encourage you to apply even if you do not meet every listed qualification.
Your work will include:
-
Rigging aircraft and ground service vehicles, including landing gear, control surfaces, doors, steering, suspension, booms and lifts
-
Creating physics-driven behaviour for dynamic and towed equipment, such as baggage carts, tugs, tow bars, belt loaders and passenger boarding bridges
-
Building and maintaining Animation Blueprints, state machines and Control Rigs so vehicles behave correctly across a wide range of simulation scenarios
-
Authoring Niagara effects such as jet wash, exhaust, heat haze, tyre smoke, spray, dust and weather interactions
-
Developing tools that automate rigging, asset import, validation and other repetitive technical-art tasks
-
Profiling and optimising animation, physics and visual-effects performance to maintain the target frame rate with many simultaneous actors
-
Diagnosing and solving problems that sit between art and engineering
-
Helping improve the standards, documentation and workflows used to bring assets into the simulator
Our simulation stack includes Unreal Engine 5 and C++, with Blender used across our 3D asset and rigging workflows. We also use Python for tools and automation.
What we’re looking for
We are looking for someone who brings:
-
At least two years of professional experience working with Unreal Engine 5 on a shipped or actively developed project
-
Strong skinning and rigging skills in Blender, including experience with mechanical or vehicle rigs
-
Practical experience building Animation Blueprints and Control Rigs
-
Working knowledge of Unreal Engine physics, including constraints, joints and collision setup
-
Sound judgment about when behaviour should be simulated and when it should be animated
-
Hands-on experience creating effects with Niagara
-
Python scripting skills for tools and workflow automation
-
An understanding of real-time performance constraints and experience profiling or optimising technical-art systems
-
The ability to diagnose ambiguous technical problems and work through them methodically
-
Clear professional communication skills in English and the ability to collaborate across art and engineering
- Education in animation and 3D is good to have
Experience in any of the following would be an advantage:
-
Unreal Editor utilities, tools or plugins
-
Reading and debugging C++
-
Simulation, serious games, digital twins or training software
-
Aviation, airports or ground handling
-
Machine-learning-based animation techniques such as motion matching or learned deformers
-
Git-based workflows in a multidisciplinary team
-
AI-assisted workflows for rigging, animation, asset generation or automation
We are actively exploring where AI can improve technical-art workflows. We are looking for someone who is curious about these methods while retaining a critical eye for where they genuinely add value.
You do not need to match every point. What matters most is the quality of your work, how you approach technical problems and how much you want to build.
What we offer
-
Competitive compensation. Base salary plus stock option and bonus plans, subject to terms and eligibility.
-
A market-leading product. Set the standard for an emerging market and build tools used by major airports.
-
A meaningful voice. Shape our technical-art workflows and decide how vehicles, equipment, and environments come to life.
-
Varied challenges. Work across animation, physics, visual effects, tooling, and optimization across the pipeline.
-
Time to move. We value physical activity and offer dedicated work time for exercise and wellbeing.
-
Room to grow. Grow your role toward technical leadership, specialist expertise, or team management as Aveo expands.
