Fish Health and Biosecurity Specialist

The Fish Health and Biosecurineibbty Specialist is part of the Fish Health Team at Benchmark Genetics Iceland and the global Benchmark fish health network. The role supports our ambition to maintain excellent health and welfare standards in land-based broodstock production of Atlantic salmon.

This is a hands-on position involving fish health monitoring, sampling, diagnostics, and follow-up of fish welfare and biosecurity routines across all our Icelandic sites. The position collaborates closely with the Fish Health Lead Iceland, production teams, and the Biology & Quality department, focusing on preventive health and maintaining a high level of biosecurity throughout all life stages – from egg to broodstock.

The specialist also contributes to internal and external health reporting, welfare documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives across our facilities.

  • Support the Fish Health Lead Iceland in executing disease screening and monitoring programs
  • Conduct health inspections, sampling, and necropsies of broodstock during routine and spawning operations
  • Participate in spawning activities, including health inspections and sampling
  • Contribute to disease surveillance, diagnostics, and health documentation
  • Take part in monthly health visits across our three facilities (two broodstock and one smolt site)
  • Support implementation and compliance of biosecurity and fish welfare routines
  • Contribute to development and improvement of internal SOPs and Benchmark’s Quality Management System (QMS)
  • Assist in training, internal communication, and reporting related to fish health and welfare
  • Support audits and inspections performed by certification bodies, authorities, and customers
Menntunar- og hæfniskröfur
  • Degree in Veterinary Medicine or Fish Health Biology
  • Experience in aquaculture is an advantage
  • Good documentation and communication skills
  • Fluent in English (understanding of a Nordic language is an advantage; Icelandic is considered beneficial)
  • Valid driver’s license
