Senior Geneticist

This Senior Geneticist position will contribute to successful running and optimization of the salmon breeding program in Iceland. This will include planning and implementation of all aspects of the breeding program, including nucleus selection and commercial product development. This person is expected to manage large projects and operations by working closely with the specialist genetics, commercial, and production teams. The person is also expected to actively participate in relevant R&D projects, and to collaborate globally with teams across Benchmark Genetics. This position is part of Benchmark’s technical genetics and R&D team which consists of approximately 25 scientists.

  • Contribute to effective management and implementation of the salmon breeding program in Iceland, including:
    • Broodstock management/breeding program design
    • Performance testing and data collection, candidates and sentinel groups
    • Selection for reproduction of breeding nucleus candidates and commercial broodstock under controlled inbreeding
    • Management of practical implementation of breeding program operations
  • Contribute to management and analysis of data to monitor and document that expected results are being met and contribute to implementation of necessary adjustments as needed
  • Manage effective implementation of practical operations to ensure effective selection and management of nucleus families and commercial lines, liaising closely with production teams
  • Active involvement in relevant internal and external R&D activities for possible future implementation
  • Participate in active collaboration across Benchmark Genetics technical and wider teams, including global salmon genetics meetings, and global scientific meetings
Menntunar- og hæfniskröfur
  • A higher degree in applied genetics (animal breeding/statistics/genomics or other relevant areas) or in a broader discipline with practical experience of fish breeding and production
  • Knowledge and experience of breeding programs in livestock and/or aquaculture species
  • Knowledge and experience of salmon production, data management and analysis
  • Knowledge and experience of project management and delivery
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and motivational skills 
  • Excellent team-work, communication, and problem solving skills
  • Ability to build relationships and liaise with relevant internal and external stakeholders
  • Comfortable with working with colleagues in a variety of international locations
  • Self-motivated and autonomous with effective time management abilities
  • Flexible and able to travel nationally and occasionally internationally as required
