Engineering Manager

Fenris Creations is looking for an Engineering Manager to support and grow the infrastructure engineering team behind EVE Online.

EVE is a single shared universe where every player can leave their mark on a persistent game that has been running for over 20 years. Our game cluster spans our own datacenter hardware and AWS. Our close-knit team looks after it end to end: the servers and network gear in the racks, the cloud networks and Golang services in AWS, and the incident, change, testing, alerting, automation and budget processes that keep everything running.

You’ll guide the engineers who build and run that platform. You’ll help set technical direction, take responsibility for reliability and cost, and stay close enough to the work to make good decisions during an outage or a hardware refresh. This is a hands-on management role.

The role is based in Reykjavík, Iceland. We’re a hybrid office, with flexibility over which days you work on-site and which from home.

Helstu verkefni og ábyrgð

Support and develop the team

  • Hire, mentor and grow infrastructure engineers through regular 1:1s, feedback and career conversations.
  • Balance the team’s priorities across platform work, requests from game teams, operational load and technical debt.
  • Plan together with product owners and other engineering leads.

Look after reliability

  • Shape our incident process: on-call, escalation, alerting and blameless postmortems.
  • Set clear change management practices for deployment reviews, maintenance windows and rollback plans.
  • Define and track SLIs and SLOs for core services, and use them to guide priorities.

Care for the platform

  • Guide architecture across our datacenter and AWS environments, and how traffic flows between them.
  • Oversee the hardware lifecycle, from procurement and bare-metal provisioning to firmware and OS updates and decommissioning.
  • Be responsible for network design and security across both environments, from Cisco routers and firewalls to VPCs, Transit Gateways and access controls.
  • Encourage automation in provisioning, configuration, CI/CD and observability to reduce toil for the team.

Manage the budget

  • Plan and forecast cloud and on-premise infrastructure spend as the game grows.
  • Work with our cloud, datacenter, CDN and tooling vendors on relationships and contracts.
  • Find cost savings without compromising reliability.

  • Cloud experience, especially in networking and security (VPCs, Transit Gateways, routing, security groups), and running services at scale.
  • Solid networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, BGP, VLANs, firewalls and router configuration.
